Sidewalk & Curb Rehabilitation

Sidewalk & Curb Rehabilitation — City of Chatham-Kent, Ontario
Project Overview:
Our company was engaged by the City of Chatham-Kent to deliver a large-scale of sidewalks and curbs across multiple areas. The project focused on restoring deteriorated pedestrian walkways, improving safety, and ensuring compliance with municipal standards.
Our Role:
We provided Project Management and Consultation services. Our team advised on technical specifications, and managed the contractor’s work to guarantee compliance with municipal requirements. We also oversaw safety and traffic management planning, which represented a critical component of the project.
Scope of Work
Sidewalk Works: Demolition and replacement of damaged sidewalk sections for smooth and safe pedestrian pathways.
Curb Rehabilitation: Repair and reconstruction of concrete curbs to enhance accessibility and drainage.
Concrete Finishing: Placement and finishing of high-quality concrete designed for durability under heavy use and harsh climate conditions.
Traffic & Pedestrian Management: Implementation of comprehensive safety protocols, traffic control systems, signage, and barricades to protect both workers and the public.
Challenges
The most demanding aspect of the project was safety and traffic control, which often exceeded the cost and duration of the actual construction works.
For example, a two-month construction schedule could require up to six additional weeks of safety planning, signage installation, and traffic control measures.
Strict coordination was required to minimize public disruption and ensure compliance with municipal safety regulations.
Outcome:
The project successfully delivered safe, accessible, and durable sidewalks and curbs for the community. Despite the complexity of safety and traffic management, works were completed to the highest standard, significantly upgrading pedestrian infrastructure across Chatham-Kent.
